Spanish engineers are developing a drone to aid migrant search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea. The drone is part of the ‘FREEDA’ project, promoted by the Hemav Foundation, a non-profit organisation that facilitates and develops technology for social purposes, in collaboration with students from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

The device can detect vulnerable vessels and alert humanitarian groups to its location, such as the Spanish aid group Open Arms. The drone also aims to improve the safety of aid workers who come under fire.
